Food of the Month Clubs Go Gourmet

Lundi, décembre 31st, 2007

By Aldene Fredenburg The first food of the month club, started decades ago, may have been the Fruit of the Month Club; the company sent out a box containing several pieces of a different fruit each month - different types of apples, pears, and more exotic fare. The idea caught on, and now numerous coffee clubs, beer clubs, and other gourmet food clubs delight thousands of lucky recipients each month The Cheesecake of the Month Club features a different, handmade cheesecake each month, made and shipped from a variety of gourmet bakeries around the U.S. Recipients can choose from a three-, six-, or twelve-month subscription to the club, or a number of other options. Cheesecakes sent out in the past include the club’s famous New York cheesecake, as well as chocolate, blueberry, and caramel varieties. For fans of a great brew, the Beer of the Month club features premium beers from any number of microbreweries. Every month, a dozen bottles of beer arrive in the mail, including anywhere from two to four different brands of beer. You’ll be able to sample the best of the microbrews in the U.S., and will surely find some that will remain your lifelong favorites. The Specialty Food Club from Stonewall Kitchen doesn’t limit itself to one food category, but offers a variety of different gourmet foods. Available with either a three- or six-month membership, Stonewall Kitchen offers items from every category of their fine line of gourmet foods, and tucks a collection of recipe cards into each month’s selection. This January’s selection from Stonewall Kitchen is a wonderful welcome on a cold winter morning; their farmhouse pancake and waffle mix is accompanied by a container of maple syrup from Maine; their wild blueberry jam, also from Maine; and their spectacularly unique raspberry peach champagne jam. Their July selection has an Asian theme, with wasabi mustard, wasabi ginger sauce, toasted sesame oil, Chinese five spice mix, and sesame ginger teriyaki sauce. Beyond Food - More Interesting “Of the Month” Clubs Imagine fresh flowers - Peruvian lilies, red roses, exotic Birds of Paradise - arriving each month from some of the world’s best growers to brighten your home, summer, winter, or in between; or a new, fun, and challenging jigsaw puzzle. Cigar clubs, candle clubs, even necktie clubs bring something different to you or a favorite friend or family member throughout the year. Food of the month and other clubs bring a bit of adventure into recipients’ lives as they look forward to each new arrival. It’s also a really creative way to show your love and affection often; your loved ones will be reminded of you every time they receive that special package in the mail. 5 Ways to Get Back on Track After the Holiday Madness

Vendredi, décembre 28th, 2007

By Maureen Staiano Getting back on track after the holidays is easy for some people. It seems as though they never break stride at holiday time. It is barely a blip on the screen of their lives.
For others though getting back in the swing of things after the holidays is a bit of a challenge and can leave you feeling let down and out of sorts. All the stress, hustle and bustle seem to come crashing to a halt the day after Christmas and we often feel as though we are in a holding pattern until New Years Eve.
Routines have been broken. Eating habits have been tossed right out the window and even if the scale has been a friend it seems to have been quickly become a foe as we dread seeing what the excess in calories has cost us in weight gain. New Years resolutions may be sitting there staring back from the paper daring us to fail one more time.
So how do we get ourselves back in the swing again? How do we shake off the after holiday blues and look forward to the coming weeks? Oh and yes how do we get back on track with our eating? 1. Dont feel the same pressure to make the holiday disappear as you did getting all the decorations up and the place decked out in the first place. Tackle most of the mess such as the presents and all the paper and garbage first. This will help you to regain a little order out of the chaos. After that, take your time deconstructing the holiday decorations. Enjoy the beauty you have created just a little longer. If you have truly been running like crazy this holiday season, taking a moment to quietly appreciate what you have created is important. 2. Take an evening to either sit and write your thank you notes or to just phone a few
of the friends you may not have had time to speak to during the crazy holiday season. The pressure to reach out and touch everyone during the holidays is immense and can leave us feeling as though we havent met our responsibilities if anyone is left out. The pleasure of a relaxed conversation or expressing sincere appreciation in a note almost instantly lifts your spirits. 3. Dont even bother with the scale. If you have clothes that you like and they fit you
well, take a few key pieces to mix and match as your eating habits get back on track over the next few weeks. After the over indulgence of the holiday season gradually get yourself back into healthy eating. Pare down your shopping list eliminating all the snacks and junk foods that may have been the holiday staples.
Increase the fruits and vegetables as well as adding in large green salads. It may take a few days or even a week to retrain your taste buds. They have grown accustomed to more fat and sugar so give them a little time to readjust. 4. If your workout has gone by the wayside do not try to get up to full speed in a
weeks time. Start back slowly and work up to where you were before the holiday interruption. If you have been regular in your workouts before the holiday you will be back in the swing of it in no time and without suffering with soreness or fatigue. 5. Do something nice for yourself. Something special. It may be a quiet dinner with your significant other or it may be massage or facial. It may be a weekend away or an afternoon out in nature. Whatever feeds your soul and makes you feel uplifted is what you are looking for here. It doesnt have to cost a penny or if you have the money to spend go ahead enjoy. What you want is to leave the season finally feeling relaxed and looking forward to what the New Year will bring. Two Thousand Years Later

Mercredi, décembre 12th, 2007

By Marquez Comelab The Passion of The Christ has caused a lot of discussions. Some people accuse the film to be anti-Semitic or that it has the potential to incite hatred and violence towards Jews. Other people object mainly to Mel Gibson’s gruesome depiction of Jesus Christ’s last 12 hours on earth in his latest film: The Passion Of The Christ. Though these are of importance, we should not allow Christ’s main message to drown and be set aside in favor of our discussions of religion, politics, film-comparisons, film-critiques and censorship. We should take this opportunity to remember what it was that Jesus Christ died for. Perhaps we can re-think and re-learn the message He may have been trying to tell us two thousand years ago. I would have preferred this paper to discuss only the main teaching of Christ and how it relates to us today; however I feel that I should address the two most popular discussions regarding the film before I can continue on. Was it anti-Semitic? I don’t believe the film was anti-Semitic. The Jews had to make a decision then and they did it no differently to how we, as a society, conduct our affairs today. In the latter part of this document, I argue that there is no reason for non-Jews to blame the Jews for what had happened. Was the gore and violence of the film appropriate? Yes. I think that the gore and violence of the film was important in illustrating the sacrifice that Jesus had to make, and was willing to take, so that we would understand what he had been trying to tell us all along. The pain and suffering he had endured shows the amount of strength that is required to love - completely and truly. Regardless of what your religious beliefs are, or whether you have a religion or not, let me first ask you to assume, just for this paper, to forget religion. Forget the notion that Jesus Christ was the Son of God. Forget the notion that he was sent here by a Divine Power. Let us just assume that he was a mortal man, made of flesh and blood, just like you and me. He saw the world differently however. He interpreted information, his experiences and his emotions differently to how most of us process our internal and external environments. As a result, he gained immense wisdom and knowledge beyond the comprehension of most of us. He tried to tell us something. He tried to share with us what he knew. The main teachings of Jesus Christ revolve around the core idea of LOVE. Love everything. Love everybody. Even your enemies! If they hit you on one cheek, turn the other cheek. Like Buddha’s message: Do NOT do unto others what you would NOT like others do unto you. Be compassionate towards all beings. That was what they taught: LOVE. He believed that it is the only philosophy that will allow us all to achieve harmony and happiness in our universe and in our lives. No amount of hate should be allowed every day and in every way that we conduct ourselves. No matter what happens, we must not hate or wish malicious thoughts towards anything or anybody. To spread that message, he spoke about it when he could, where he could. People flocked to the mountains and in the temples where he preached. A lot of his ideas fascinated people. They were new, bizarre and sometimes his ideas went against basic human instincts and the prevailing beliefs that people had at the time. He was a leader, like a shepherd guiding his herd of sheep. He led with utmost integrity. We have had a lot of leaders in the past, now and we will continue to follow them in the future. They tell us one thing but they do not have the strength and courage it takes to refuse to do another. They contradict themselves and their ideals. Is it only our leaders, celebrities and other prominent members of our society - whom we read about in the papers - who are at fault? No. Their faults are our faults. How is that? Because we still believe that it is OK to hate or express negative emotions towards others whom we feel have done us wrong or will do us wrong. We, as people, still exhibit little signs of compassion, consideration, thoughtfulness and understanding towards other people and other beings. We experience negative emotions towards other people when they mock us, when they ridicule us, when they bully us, when they humiliate us, when they deny us justice or fairness, when they torture us, when they kill or threaten to kill our loved ones, or when they deny us anything else that we consider to be our ‘human rights’. “Of course”, we say. “That’s natural!” That is exactly my point! Jesus Christ had to endure all that and yet he had gone through his last twelve hours without displaying any signs of anger, hatred, disappointment, greed or fear. In fact, during his crucifixion, he still asked that his enemies be forgiven for they knew not what they were doing. Who among us has the courage, strength and wisdom to be able to accept our predicaments like that? Jesus Christ has shown us that we must love even our enemies, be wise enough to increase our capacity to understand and show compassion towards all beings…regardless of what happens. The Jews at the time had to make a decision: to kill Jesus or not. What would have been the right thing for them to do? They did not know. If you were a common person in the streets of Jerusalem at that time and you were asked what you would like to happen to Jesus, what would you have said? For a lot of people, the information they had of Jesus Christ was very sketchy. He was whispered to be The Messiah. He had many controversial ideas but he seemed very wise and he had helped ease the misery of a lot of people. At the same time, Jesus was also accused of being a liar, a madman, a witch and a blasphemer. He had made Lazarus come back to life, walked on water and he had turned water into wine. Would you have believed those miracles? If they were not true, why would people have made them up? If they were true then definitely, Jesus was no ordinary man. And if he had powers like that, what else was he capable of doing? What if he was the Devil in disguise? Maybe it was right that he be killed while his threat could still be subdued. There were so many people chanting for his death. Surely their reasoning would not have been baseless. It was not an easy decision for any person or any group of people to make. Even Pontius Pilate who was in a position to have all the information in the land to make a decision, was torn what to do with Jesus. Pilate was like the President of the United States, with all the advisers, intelligence agencies and reporters at his disposal. Yet, he did not know what he was supposed to do. The decision came to pass to crucify Jesus. The High Priests were threatened of him. Pontius Pilate weighed his decision and allowed the people to make the choice for him. Those who were most vocal and more aggressive in their belief that Jesus Christ ought to die, got their way that day. There may have been people who probably felt strongly against it but they were not willing or able to do anything to stop it. Others were not there probably because they allowed themselves to be in a position where they knew too little information to have an opinion at a time when it was crucial that they did. Sadly, many may not just have cared. Think of all current issues we face. There are some of us who choose FOR or AGAINST a motion. Others do not choose, however, by not choosing, they have also made a choice. As one global voice, we are all divided in our opinions towards most of these issues. And only with hindsight, can we truly assess the impact of the choices we have made. It is the same dilemma that the Jews faced then. Should we look outside ourselves to see whom we can blame for the killing of Jesus? No. The Jews killed Jesus, a fellow Jew, but how different are we when we kill or hurt our own? How different are we when we allow others to suffer because it was not our problem or because we did not yet know enough about the problem? Added with our inability to be wiser than we are to accept and feel compassion towards all beings, it was our ‘human nature’ to hate and inflict pain and suffering on others that crucified Jesus Christ. That ‘human nature’ still remains unchanged even after two thousand years. What Jerusalem was then is what the world is now. And it will be that way forever…until we change. What Does Multimedia Mean and How Can it Help My Business?

Mardi, décembre 11th, 2007

By J Lewis The term multimedia simply means many ways of communicating. Media is the plural for medium and the word originated in the field of advertising over 50 years ago. The following are all examples of multimedia, they all relate to each other and are powerful tools in the advertising industry. Graphic Design for print and web
Web Design Web Development
Interactive CD ROM and DVD How can it help in marketing your company and why should you be investing in the skills of a professional graphic designer? In an era where we are constantly exposed to imagery and brands, having a strong corporate identity is a major factor for helping to market a companies products or services. Branding or corporate identity usually consists of a logotype, slogan and its associated imagery and colours.
Unfortunately there are no requirements for qualifications in order to set up as a web design, graphic design or multimedia specialist and I believe that this has had a detrimental effect on the industry as a whole. There are now numerous companies out there that have set up as design agencies and who offer poor quality services to their clients. This is particularly evident in the web design industry where it is all too easy for individuals to buy the many templates that are available and pass these off to their clients as web design. Worst still is that this poor quality work doesnt come cheap as many individuals seek to cash in on peoples lack of understanding of the multimedia industry. An important part of your marketing and branding will be your company logo so when choosing and designing a logo, make sure you have a reasonable budget and that you seek professional help. Avoid the temptation to ‘knock something up on the computer’ yourself or to ask a friend or colleague to have a go. Good graphic design need not cost a fortune but bad design will have a huge impact on how your business will be perceived. Most logos are instantly forgettable but you have the opportunity to develop something memorable if you spend time and money at the outset. Look at the big brand names that you are exposed to every day of your life and you will see just how much they invest in and value their company branding and logo to the extent that they will fiercely defend their branding with expensive lawsuits if necessary. When planning your logo, you should develop a simple written brief for the project and commission a professional graphic designer. A logo needs to be distinctive and not too much like the logo of other, well known organisations? It needs to work well with the logo of any of your major partners or funders if you have any? The new logo should work well across a range of applications ie. on a conference banner, business card, letterheads, brochures, website etc.? It also needs to look good when reproduced on a basic photocopier? For your logo colour, it might be better to avoid particular tones of colour associated with say political parties. Limiting the range of colours will help to keep costs of reproduction down. For logo typeface, limit the number of typefaces for headlines and body text and choose modern, clean typefaces. John Lewis is a multimedia designer who specialises in producing interactive CD Rom, original graphic design Edinburgh and web design Scotland. Bride’s Survival Guide - Working With Bridesmaids And Groomsmen

Dimanche, décembre 9th, 2007

By Ashley Rader The bridesmaids and the maid of honor are key players in your wedding that is why you pay them special attention. We would like to offer you some tips with working bridesmaids and the maid of honor. Your selected group of women is normally friends and family. You know their preferences and know how to make it work. Never the less there can still be tensions as the big day approaches and your expectations of them may change. Try your best to keep everyone at ease. Help with decision making so that the wedding will run smoothly. A few good tips with working with the bridesmaids and maid of honor will help you to maintain a well-planned wedding. The bridesmaids and the maid of honor should be included in decision making such as your floral arrangements or clothing. Their perspective on colors may help you to finalize things more quickly. The bridesmaids and your maid of honor can even help you select items for your menu for the guests. Many times, they have knowledge from previous weddings or perhaps just planning things on their own might be of use. It is not a surprise that sometimes friends and family are more in tuned with what you really want than a wedding planner who possibly hasn’t a clue about your likes and dislikes only about format and style. A wedding planner is still a good person to have so that things properly are completed and so that you don’t drive your bridesmaids crazy. Remember your bridesmaids should stay your friend’s after your day is over. The use of both the wedding planner and the bridesmaids and maid of honor can be very helpful. Make the event as pleasant as possible when going out to select have coffee afterwards or an ice cream. The day of the wedding set up a hair appointment, nails, and make up at your favorite boutique for everyone. Normally the boutique owner will add coffee and tea for your guests. This makes the event even more meaningful. The bridesmaids and maid of honor may seem easy to please since you have always known them and had fun together before. Now you are thinking I need some tips with working with the groomsmen. Normally about the only thing you need to do is to make sure that they go to the Tuxedo Shop in plenty of time to get the proper fitting clothes. You might be surprised to know that the groomsmen have a tendency to take over matters themselves. Usually the groomsmen are the best friend of the groom and know him very well. The groomsmen usually plan and execute a bachelor party. The groom will inform the groomsmen where to go for their tuxedo and they usually go on their own time. The night of practice, a dinner normally follows afterwards and this is the time to present special presents to both the bridesmaid and groomsmen. Taking care of the groomsmen you will find is not nearly as hard as the bridesmaids because the girls need more things to make a beautiful wedding than does the men. The Miraculous Mirror Box

Samedi, décembre 8th, 2007

By Gary Kurz Scientists have long documented a condition known as “phantom limb”, which occurs in about 80 percent of amputees and a smaller percentage of people born without limbs. Phantom limb is the sensation that a missing limb is still attached to one’s body and that it is functional. Reports of feeling pain in the missing limb are also common with this condition. Although not all amputees report pain, most do acknowledge that they feel as if their missing limb itches, twitches or causes them occasional discomfort. Not being able to actually scratch, rub or move the imaginary limb, patients develop a great sense of frustration and anxiety. It some cases the frustration is chronic. An innovative scientist came up with a very clever and creative therapy. He created a simple mirror box where those who had lost a hand or arm could put their remaining arm in the box and see both that arm and a reflection of it on the opposite side of the box. The result was that patients saw two normal arms and hands. The patient was told to move the hand and fingers on the real arm while also imagining that they were moving the hand and fingers on the missing limb. Of course, as soon as the real arm was moved, the reflected image also moved and the patient actually felt the sensation of both arms moving. The psychological impact was immediate and phenomenal. Relief from the frustration of not being able to move the missing limb subsided. In a sense, a similar therapy can be applied to believers who are suffering from frustration. A believer who is being unfaithful to their savior, either in church attendance or their calling, also suffers from frustrations. Most believers will not admit this. They will attribute frustration in their life to work, finances or other problems. However, when a believer is living a life less than what the Lord wants it to be, the result is usually spiritual frustration. As the flesh battles against the spirit, the Christian “feels” that something is missing and they are unfulfilled. A young man, who had departed from faithful attendance at church and Godly living, found himself in great distress over the type of life he had come to live. One morning he awoke from yet another drunken stupor, lying half naked on the ground under a small tree. With his head pounding in pain from the effects of the liquor, he looked up toward the heavens and asked “Why don’t you care about me and the way I live?” Certain that God would not answer him, he angrily grabbed onto the tree to pull himself up off the ground. As he did so, he dislodged an old, uninhabited bird nest that fell to the ground at his feet. A piece of yellow paper was entwined in the nest, apparently put there by the previous occupants to strengthen the nest walls. Drawn to the paper for some unknown reason, the young man reached down and pulled it from the nest and dusted it off. As he looked at the paper he began to tremble uncontrollably. There in his hand was a sheet of music he had used in Sunday school as a young child many years earlier when he attended the country church a few blocks away. It was torn and weathered, but it still had his name on it and a few of the words from the song were also readable. As he read them, he recalled his railing accusation toward God just moments earlier and began to weep. God had indeed answered, for the paper read “his eye is on the sparrow and I know he cares for me!” Not all of our questions and problems will be remedied as miraculously as this young man’s were, but we can be sure that God is ever present and ready to work in our lives when we come to him in earnest. Believers need to be proactive in being faithful to the Lord. We can only do that by spending time with him in his word. The Bible is many things to many people, but perhaps believers need to view it as a spiritual mirror box. If something is missing from our lives, we can look into this wonderful and miraculous book and see the reflection of what we should be, a replica of the Lord Jesus Christ. Being like him is the remedy for our spiritual frustrations. The author is a retired Coast Guard Officer with over 32 years of service. He is also a Baptist Preacher and Bible Teacher. He helps those grieving the loss of a pet to understand the Biblical evidence that proves they live on. His most popular book, “Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates” delivers hope and comfort to the reader in a very gentle, yet convincing way. Growing Herbs For Your Medicine Chest

Vendredi, décembre 7th, 2007

By James Penn Herbs are a common staple in American cooking. How else would food get such great taste? Ok, aside from the chemical laden food additives we put on our foods today, herbs are the forefathers of taste. If you have been to any large supermarket lately, you may have noticed how much more space the produce department has dedicated to herbs. That is mainly because of the knowledge explosion about what herbs can do for your overall health. If you are considering using herbs as a medicinal tool, you will have a choice to make. Should you purchase your herbs at the local market or should you grow them yourself? Obviously, as a believer in herbal medicine, I believe there is nothing better for you than ingesting your own hand grown herbs. Nowadays, there are too many reasons to doubt that your herbs were handled with care. In other words, polluted by chemicals and pesticides. To start your own herb garden you need to determine which location is better for you, inside or out. There are many herbs that can be grown inside. Furthermore, if you are going to grow herbs for medicinal and cooking purposes, having them inside at your fingertips is very convenient. You may even consider a small indoor selection for the herbs you use most and utilize the outdoor garden for the herbs you will use more sparingly. So, which herbs are best for your situation? If you are going to plant indoors, here is a modest list of herbs that are very windowsill friendly: * Basil, chives, dill, fennel, hyssop, lavender, parsley, peppermint, rosemary, sage, savory and thyme. If you are going to plant outdoors, the following plants will flourish beautifully. These are all perennial medicinal herbs and do well for anyone in a temperate climate. * Chasteberry, goldenseal, lemon balm, mint, oregano, spearmint, St. Johns Wort, tansy, valerian, wild yam and willow. Of course, the list is enormous. There are so many herbs available today that it would be impossible to list them all. However, this serves as a good place to start. Consult a good gardening book once you know exactly which herbs you are going to grow. Once you have a good working garden established, you will need to figure out how you will harvest the crop. Snipping off leaves is by far the best way to go. In fact, the more you snip them the more medicinal they become. Of course there are other methods such as crushing, which mutilate the entire plant. If you are going to preserve the herbs for later use, I would recommend drying them in paper bags. If your garden is outdoors in a colder climate, I would highly recommend doing this at least once before the first freeze so you can enjoy your herbs all winter long. Herbs should be stored in a cool dark place. To maintain herbs potency it is essential to keep them away from light, heat and oxygen as much as possible. Growing an herb garden does not have to be complicated. It is really quite simple. Furthermore, there is nothing like creating your own medicine chest. Mother nature has provided all the medicine we need and placed it at our fingertips. Relationship Problems & Advice - Providing A Fresh Approach - Part 2

Mardi, décembre 4th, 2007

By Martin Worthington Picture yourself hiding alone in a foxhole in the middle of a battlefield. Bullets are flying everywhere. You radio for help and there is no answer. War is raging all around you. Fear is welling up inside. Anxiety over the outcome mixes with the fear. As you reflect on how you got here, and upon who gave the orders to put you where you are right now, anger mixes in with the fear and anxiety. The situation seems completely hopeless. You tell yourself, I am going to die here in this foxhole, alone. Suddenly, the bullets stop. The cries of battle fade into silence. You can hear your heart pounding in your chest, as you wonder about the change in your circumstances. Hope starts to come back as you work up the nerve to lift your head above the lip of the foxhole to see whats going on out there. At first glance, the surface vision looks almost tranquil. The field is quiet and the trees are rustling gently in the wind. As you look deeper and more closely, you see the horror of the battle. Details etch indelibly into your memory as you see the barely visible wasted lives and debris scattered just out of reach. Looking deeper, you reflect again on how you got here. You are now saddened by the loss, anxious about the outcome, afraid of dying all alone, and angry about being put where you are. Right then you see the enemy forces advancing in the distant forest. There are hundreds, even thousands of them. The amount of loss you’ve suffered becomes clear. Anxiety starts to well up in your heart. Fear begins to overcome your rational thoughts. Anger starts to build as you reflect on the resentment that has fueled your bitterness. Thats when you hear the whistling-whine of the incoming volley from the enemy. They know you are here. They know your position. They know you are a threat. They send a mortar in your direction. Incoming! Daily life sometimes seems like a war, divided into battles and skirmishes. All you have to do is get up in the morning to start being in the foxhole. Just start your day. Walk to the kitchen. Step out the door in the morning, on your way to school, work, the grocery store, the zoo, on a cross-country trip in the car, or on an airplane. It doesn’t matter where you are, when you leave or when you arrive, just get ready, because the bullets and mortars are already on the way. They know you are here. They know your position and they know you are a threat. ENEMY FIRE comes in from unknown persons inflicting damage and pain upon you unexpectedly. Someone steals your purse. An inconsiderate driver cuts you off or takes the last parking slot in that row. The cashier at the supermarket intentionally short-changes you, or slams your groceries carelessly into the cart smashing your fruit and bread. You spot someone you dont even know laughing at you. You get an annoying sales call during dinner. The doctor tells you that you have a terminal illness. A look, a word, an action; all aimed directly at you, at your pain, at your faults, at your heart. All of these things are incoming from the people you do not, or barely know. Nor, do they know you. FRIENDLY FIRE is the most unexpected, most painful, and yet most common type of incoming. Your boss is inconsiderate of your contributions to the big project. Your husband or wife barely notices that you exist today. Your friend calls with bad news. Your son or daughter says they hate you. Your husband buys a brand-new boat without so much as a word. Your parent dies. Your spouse abandons you. Your father leaves when you are three years old. Your mother drinks herself into a stupor every day. Your spouse commits adultery, with your best friend. You are emotionally, physically or sexually abused by someone you know and love. Your spouse reacts in anger to something you say or do. Your spouse becomes quiet or shuts down when confronted. No one around you appreciates a good thing you accomplished. You are not listened to. You are criticized for how you look or how you act. You are hurting and receive no comfort. You are left to your own choices, but with no resources. You are threatened with harm or even death. All of these things are incoming from the people closest to you, the people that you love and spend the most time with. They know you very well, and they love you, too. What? How can these people even begin to love me? They are hurting me, sometimes intentionally crushing at my happiness, my spirit. They are ripping at the very fabric that I am knit from, squashing my potential, and stealing who I am, right before my very own eyes. These people are the ones who are supposed to love you, care for you, comfort you, appreciate you, accept you, provide for you, nurture you, walk with you, hold your hand, pick you up, and when all seems lost they will still be there, never abandoning you. Why, then are they taking pot shots at me? I think I like the foxhole better, so I retreat to it. It is safe in here. No one can shoot at me in here. All I really have to do is keep my head down. Just when I feel like Im safe in my foxhole in the middle of the battlefield, in the middle of a skirmish in the war, I look up around the rim of the foxhole. There they are. All of my companions, the ones who are the closest to me, to my heart, are lined up around the rim, point blank… They are aiming right at me. Effective List Management Can Save You Big

Lundi, décembre 3rd, 2007

By Joy Gendusa Lets talk about how to keep your postage costs down. So far you have been following my advice and mailing to the same list more than once. At some point you find lists that will produce returns continually, but you notice that you are receiving more returns than when you started mailing to those lists. You may see things like “Undeliverable as Addressed” or “Forwarding Order Expired.” Every time you mail to an address and that prospect has moved or cannot be found
for any reason, you have just paid for the postage with no possibility of getting a response. Obviously it is a pretty big waste of money to continue to mail to this address, but what do you do about it? You could simply go into the list of names that you have purchased and delete the returns. No more bad addresses, no more wasted postage, right? That is one option but there is a better way to handle the situation. The US Postal Service has an NCOA (National Change of Address) System that a limited number of companies are licensed to access. These companies are able to take the list that you have purchased, or compiled yourself, and check it against the USPS system. You will receive a report that will let you know if anyone on your list has moved, gone out of business, or even if the zip code that contact was in was changed by the Post Office itself. Along with the report you will receive a new copy of your list that has been cleaned and updated. The cost for having your list checked is very economical (about $5.00 per thousand records) and will allow you to keep getting your message out to as many people in your list as possible. At times you can see up to a 10% undeliverable rate, and it can even be higher on older lists that you have been using for a while. Average is more like 5% undeliverable so lets take a look at the numbers at that rate. If you mail 10,000 and get 5% back for bad addresses: 10,000 x .05 = 500 pieces. You will have paid postage on 500 pieces that did not reach their destination. So if you mail to your list again without cleaning it you have just wasted: 500 x $0.23 = $115.00. If you were to NCOA that list at a rate of $5.00 per thousand you would have spent: 10 x $5.00 = $50.00. So you have three choices when faced with a list that needs cleaning: 1. Spend hours deleting every return that you receive from your list. 2. Waste $115.00 or more in postage every time you mail to that list. or 3. Have the list checked by an NCOA service and get back in touch with customers that may have moved, for around one tenth the cost. The NCOA service is the easiest and most effective way to keep your postage costs down. Joy Gendusa founded PostcardMania in 1998; her only assets a computer and a phone.
